Perched at 1,676 meters in the lush, steep slopes of the Indigo Mountains, the Dong Li Tan village presents its exquisite natural processed Catuai. This new entrant to the specialty coffee scene is more than a coffee; it’s a beacon of change for the community. Emerging from a history rooted deeply in the traditions of the Pa-O people, the village of Dong Li Tan, which translates to “large old village,” is making significant strides by transitioning from poppy to coffee cultivation under the guidance of the Indigo Mountain co-op.
Our Dong Li Tan lot captivates with a delightful interplay of poached plums and the light, floral effervescence reminiscent of 7-Up, rounded out by the subtle tartness of goji berries. These notes emerge beautifully thanks to the meticulous natural drying process that carefully adapts to the region’s climatic shifts, spanning 18 to 22 days across the harvest season.
The Pa-O, the vibrant community behind this coffee, are known for their colorful turbans that pay homage to their fabled dragon mother and Weiza father. Initially, fleeing to the Shan Hills nearly a thousand years ago, the Pa-O have woven their Buddhist beliefs and robust traditions into the fabric of Dong Li Tan.
Today, as one of the newest members of the Indigo Mountain co-op, Dong Li Tan stands as a display of the community’s transformative journey through coffee. This shift not only preserves their rich heritage but also paves the way for sustainable and inclusive economic growth amid the region’s historical conflicts.
