We haven’t been to Ethiopia ourselves, but through conversations with our importing partner Osito and a fair amount of research, we’ve come to respect what’s happening in Gera. This lot comes from Genji Challa, a highland village where heirloom varieties grow under native shade, in red volcanic soil, at elevations near 2,000 meters.

This part of southwestern Ethiopia was once known for low-grade naturals. That started to change around 2010, when farmers in places like Genji Challa began organizing into cooperatives and investing in washed processing. Today, the region produces some of the most expressive and consistent coffees in the country.

The processing here is handled by Telila, a private washing station founded by Mike Mamo. Mike is both the owner of Telila and a co-founder of Osito, which means this supply chain is unusually connected. Coffee is sorted by village, delivery day, and drying bed. Each lot is tracked from the moment it’s received to the moment it’s sealed for export.
