It’s been a hot second since we’ve had a Guatemalan coffee on the menu, but we’re back. And we’re grateful. This lot comes from Nery Pablo López, a second-generation producer farming high up in Huehuetenango.
His farm, Wacamaya, sits near the edge of a forest where cold air and lingering moisture make things tough for coffee trees. Nery has been working this land since 2010, slowly restoring it with better varieties, shade management, and support from El Sendero Cooperative. Productivity and quality have followed.
The name “Wacamaya” comes from a family joke. His dad meant to say “malla” (mesh) but accidentally said “guacamaya” (parrot) in Mam, their Mayan language. It made them laugh, and the name stuck. So did the coffee.
Huge thanks to Primavera for helping make this connection. In the cup: golden delicious apple, chocolate cake, and Nutella.
